Merrepen Women’s Centre (now Merrepen Arts, Culture and Language Aboriginal Corporation) produced batik in the first years after its inception in 1986.
While twe are most renowned for their hand screen-printed textiles, their artists have worked across a variety of mediums including painting on canvas, etching, and batik. The practice of batik has a significant history among Aboriginal women’s art centres in Central Australia, such as those at Utopia and Ernabella, which likely influenced its adoption at Merrepen and other centres like Bábbarra Women’s Centre.
