Troy Mardigan
Troy has made this etching of mindimindi (water lily) in the exuberant style of Mary Kunyi (his grandmother). The round fruit of minimindi contains many small seeds. The skin is peeled off to expose the orange brown seeds, which are eaten. The stems of flowers can also be eaten, the stem is softened by leaving it in the sun for a short period, the thin outer skin is then peeled off. The tubers are dug up out of the mud, they are washed and roasted on the coals. They have a pleasant starchy taste and are also medicinal.
This etching was made as part of a print workshop held at Merrepen Arts in March 2016 with master print maker Basil Hall and facilitated by Nomad Art Productions, Darwin. Ten artists participated in the week-long workshop.
Troy is an artist from the Ngan’gikurrunggurr language group.
He has a strong connection to his (deceased) grandmother’s artistic and cultural legacy. He learned how to paint from his late grandmother when he was a young boy. His grandmother was an important artist and cultural knowledge custodian, and she heavily influenced his style and subject matter. He creates art using traditional stories and styles that reflect the teachings he received from her. Troy integrates traditional stories and styles with his Christian faith, using his understanding of the Scriptures as inspiration for some of his paintings. His artworks often relate to the land, community, and events in Nauiyu, such as a collaborative mural depicting the 2015 Boxing Day flood, where he and other artists told the story of the event.
